Showing compassion and empathy in your approach to your work, you’ll be required to deliver a compliant and customer focused crematorium service to bereaved families.
You’ll be responsible for cremations and ensuring that the crematory equipment is well maintained and operating correctly and safely. You’ll ensure that the identity of the deceased is maintained throughout the process, and for attending to the storage and disposal of the cremated remains.
You’ll clean and prepare the Chapel and assist with playing recorded music during funeral services. You’ll have record-keeping and administrative duties, alongside grounds maintenance duties to ensure all areas in and around the crematorium are clean and well maintained.
You will carry out the scattering of cremated remains in the presence of the deceased’s family and friends in the Garden of Remembrance.
The role will involve a reasonable amount of manual handling.
This role is full-time, 37 hours per week.
The hours of work are between 08:00 - 17.30 depending on the duties you are covering that week.
You will be required to work at the weekends and bank holidays on a rota basis (1 in 5). This may increase to 1 in 4 to cover periods of absence. The hours for weekend working are:
08:00 - 10:00 and 16.00 - 17.00 on a Saturday
09:00 - 10:00 and 16.00 – 17.00 on a Sunday.
Interviews will take place on Monday 28th or Tuesday 29th October 2024.
You will need to have completed the CTTS qualification (or be willing to work towards this) and be comfortable handling coffins/cremated remains.
You’ll need to be confident operating machinery and ideally be able to use Multimedia equipment and software (training will be provided).
You’ll need a customer focused, team orientated approach with excellent communication and the patience and ability to remain calm in difficult situations. You’ll need to be able to work without supervision and have a mature attitude. You must be flexible and demonstrate an organised approach to work.
Ideally you will have experience in bereavement services, with an ability to work with the highest level of dignity towards the deceased and their families and having respect for different religious beliefs and the needs of all faiths.
Portchester Crematorium is managed and operated by the Portchester Crematorium Joint Committee, representing the Local Authorities of Fareham, Gosport, Havant and Portsmouth.
